Are you a Spray Tan Virgin?

spray tan

For those of us who have pale skin, looking bronzed and healthy can be nothing more than a dream, especially as we now know sunbathing comes with risks. So how do celebrities, actors and performers achieve a beautiful healthy glow without exposing their bodies to the sunís harmful rays?

From using self-tanning products at home, to spray tanning in a salon there are many ways you can now enjoy an all year tan, just like the celebs. If you are fed up of looking pale and pasty and have never experienced the wonders of a spray tan before, why not treat yourself this summer.

Here's a little information on what to expect when you visit a professional spray tanning salon.

The Basics

The Spray Tanning process sprays a fine mist of liquid onto your body, containing an ingredient called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). On contact with the oxygen in the air and the amino acids in your skin, your skin after a period of time will turn brown. Different skin types react in different degrees to the spray so there are different strengths of solution available to achieve the correct depth of tan for each person.

Where Can I get a Spray Tan

Most beauty salons will have a dedicated tanning booth. The mist is sprayed onto your body through nozzles or jets to ensure your whole body is covered. Alternatively some beauticians use air guns instead which are more mobile and smaller.

Preparing for a Spray Tan

When you make your appointment your beautician will advise you of what to do prior to your appointment but here are some tips to put you in the picture;

  • Shave or wax a couple of days before your appointment so that your pores arenít open on the day of your treatment
  • Exfoliate your skin properly on the day of your appointment to remove dead skin cells - Clarins has some great exfoliation products
  • Remove all moisturisers and deodorant before so the tan will spray on evenly
  • Right before the application you may be advised to put some Vaseline on your knees, ankles, elbows and palms to avoid these areas turning too dark

During Your Spray Tan

You should remove all your make-up, jewellery and clothing. You can wear a bikini if you prefer but this will give you tan lines. Most salons provide paper knickers and suggest you go topless Ė remember they have seen it all before, so donít be shy. The spraying process may take up to 10 minutes and your beautician will advise you which way to turn for an all over, even tan.

It's best to wear loose fitting clothing when you come out of your session as well as flip flops to avoid any rubbing. Your tan will start to develop over the next few hours so make sure you do not shower or use moisturiser. Avoid excessive bathing or swimming as this may also affect how your tan develops.
